The Ideas of the North - 4 - Fire Still Rising - literally the night before...

Updated: Aug 5

Lots of variety on show here in the architecture of these blocks... The last really high block curves out like the front of a ship. Albert Dock to the right.

One rarely looks up on Bold Street at the wonderful upper level architecture. Quite quirky. Around here there used to be a record shop called Penny Lane Records that was really good. They used to sell deleted albums really cheap. Could always find a good bargain. Spent a lot of my youth in there.

Bold Street - the alternative kind of street in Liverpool. At the top is the 'bombed out Church' St Luke's. The exterior is intact but the centre was destroyed in the bombing Blitz of World War Two, that killed 4000 locals. I was once in a museum in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada and they had a picture of the church in relation to trade links with Liverpool. The guide knew everything, but not the story of the bombed out Church. I think it is great we still have it. The battle to stop fascism in the streets of Liverpool is seemingly not over given the riots of early August 2024.

Some reporters in the foreground presumably relating the events of the far right riots down at the Pier Head in Liverpool. The 'Three Graces' to the right, the rather cool ferry terminal and cultural centre to the left. The night before far right rioting occurred near here. Liverpool fighting fascism - 1940 to 2024. Hopefully it ends there.

Please look away if you are a snowflake, but this display dares to mention that the people behind the Bluecoat Chambers in Liverpool, now an art gallery etc, were once involved in slavery. 'But I don't want to hear about that.' 'Stop upsetting me.' 'Why mention that?!' Well maybe because it is history, maybe because it was overlooked for so long, and maybe a small display in a huge building is okay even if you are a right wing snowflake. It is not like the poster declares hatred of trans people, or that they do not exist, which might legitimately upset people...
